Granite Dells, Monument Peak Trailhead, Eagle Rock, Boulders Loop Graffiti Removal Project
250 square feet of graffiti removed
In 2020, we received grant funding from REI Co-op to expand our Graffiti Removal Program with our Dedicated Restoration Team and partner with us for our 4th annual Green Friday (our version of Black Friday) Lower Salt River Cleanup. The REI grant expands our Graffiti Removal Program by providing funding to put our Dedicated Restoration Team to work on graffiti removal projects and purchase much needed equipment, supplies, and safety gear. Thank you to everyone at REI for awarding us this grant and for helping us make a lasting impact on Arizona’s outdoor spaces!
In October, we contracted 3 Veterans on our 5-member Dedicated Restoration Team and got to work on this project after we completed our Washington Park Tunnel graffiti removal project, also funded by our 2020 REI grant. Our team removed 250 square feet of graffiti from the Granite Dells, Monument Peak Trailhead, Eagle Rock, and Boulders Loop Trail in addition to 542 sq ft of graffiti removed from Washington Park Tunnel. Thank you to everyone at the Tonto National Forest - Payson Ranger District for your support of these projects.
Veterans working with us on this project benefited from our program not only through paid contract work but also through spending time in nature with other veterans. It was extremely rewarding both mentally and physically for the veterans on our team to accomplish this project and make a lasting impact on the state.
Please do not use rocks & boulders on public lands for any kind of memorial, "art" or profession of love to your sweetie. Not only is it illegal, it also detracts from the beauty of the area. Regardless of your intentions or what you hope to accomplish, it's wrong. Leave no trace!
Our hope is that by removing the graffiti as seen in the pictures below, fewer people will make the mistake of thinking it is okay to tag the rocks and boulders. We believe everyone should be able to experience nature without graffiti.

Please contact the non-emergency # for the area if you see anyone vandalizing public lands & contact us when you see graffiti or trash in outdoor recreation & wilderness areas.

Please note: on the left side of the last 2 photos in this gallery, someone painted “I Love” and a name below it. Someone else had previously done a removal here and etched the letters it into the boulder. Unfortunately, we cannot fix etching on boulders.
